Gulfport
From its beginnings as a lumber port, Gulfport evolved into a diversified city. With about 7 miles of white sand beaches along the Gulf of Mexico, it has become a tourism destination, due in large part to Mississippi’s Coast Casinos. Gulfport has served as host to popular cultural and sporting events such as the World’s Largest Fishing Rodeo, the Gulf Coast Winter Classics equestrian event, and Cruisin’ the Coast, a week of classic cars. Gulfport is a thriving residential community with a strong mercantile center. Designated as a Mississippi Main Street Community, there are historic neighborhoods and home sites, as well as diverse shopping opportunities. Numerous motels are scattered throughout to accommodate golfing, gambling and water-sport tourism. The Jefferson Davis campus of Mississippi
Gulf Coast Community College is also a Gulfport asset. Gulfport is home to the Naval Construction Battalion Center, home base for the Atlantic fleet Seabees as well as the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport and the Port of Gulfport. Attractions include Gulf Islands Waterpark, Lynn Meadows Discovery Center for children and the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies.
